Our minds are affected by everything that goes into them. Movies, TV shows and even those pesky ads we hate, all of them affect us. Think why would the big multi nationals spend so much money on ad promotions that make everyone squirm whenever they come up on TV? Its precisely because what we repeatedly allow into our minds, becomes our reality. Don’t we go back to the stores and by the same brands? That is why its so important to be very careful about what we let in there(the mind, not the store :)).
How we ultimately feel about ourselves and our lives depends a lot on the balance of ‘the positive content’ vs ‘the negative content’ in our minds. The more positive stimulation we let into our minds than negative ones, the happier, lighter we feel and vice versa. So we should monitor all those things that affect our state of mind – the work we do(does it raise my consciousness), the company of people we keep(are they generally of a positive makeup?), the books we read and the movies we watch(do they motivate me?) etc.
The achievement of our goals is affected by our mental state. How often do you think about achieving your goals? Do you have thoughts of doubt?
One very powerful technique to increase your positivity quotient and align yourself with your goals is Self Suggestion. Basically, you have to repeat to yourself what you want to be or what you want to achieve. When you do this, its very important to ‘feel’ what you are suggesting to yourself. You have to feel being in the final state you want to be. You have to imagine and feel yourself having achieved your goal. What would you be doing after you have it? How would you feel?
This practice is to be done on a regular basis. I do it once every day. Its good to find a place where you have no distractions and then do it. Hold this mental state for a while.
Its very important to note that the thoughts have to be positive, you have to really feel achieving your goal. If you think how difficult it is to get your goal, it will remain difficult for you. If you want to be happy but focus on how you hate your current sad state then, because the focus is on the sad state, you will see more of sadness. Focus on exactly what you want, be clear about your goal and imagine vividly that you have achieved it.
Also notice that you have to focus more on the end goal and not on the means by which you will achieve it.
I have used this technique for a long time now and have got very good results with it. I have kept a journal in which I write down my self suggestions and goals. I have done so for about 9 years now. Its amazing to read it again and see how many of the things that appeared so difficult at a time, have in fact materialized. Its amazing to see how quickly some of them materialize.
I wanted to work for a multi national firm after graduating from college and I would imagine it to myself. Now although I was a bright student, my marks after doing my bachelor’s degree were particularly bad(how that happened is a story for another time :)). I just scored about 65%. This was way less than what most others got. It was also way less than what most multi nationals keep as a minimum cut off for freshers. Still, 3 months after leaving college, I had a job with a small firm. This was before a lot of the bright students from my class got anything. In another 2 months, I was selected by Infosys, one of the biggest IT firms in India.
Later, I wanted to come to the US. I have an entry in my journal for June 2006 that can be succinctly written as – “Have my firm initiate my US visa”. Although I was focusing on the means rather than the end goal, I did get it all, in about 1 and a half years. My firm initiated my visa. A lot of people did not get through in the ‘visa lottery’ but I did and then I landed in the US in November 2007.
This technique is basically an extension of the Law of Attraction. Or you can say, what happens in your lives is determined by the attitude you have towards it. This technique helps you set the right attitude for your goals. Go ahead and experiment with it. Please share your experiences, it becomes motivation for others to try it and gives us food for thought.
